U16s vs Banagher – Championship 11th August 2016
Desertmartin U16s played host to Banagher in Round 1 of the U16 Championship on Thursday 11th. Playing into the breeze during the first half Desertmartin did well to curtail a strong Banagher team to a five point lead at the break. But resolute defending by the visitors and Desertmartin failing to take advantage of the wind in the second period saw St Mary’s progress to the second round.
Desertmartin started sharply with Cormac McCallion scoring a goal within two minutes of the throw-in. But Banagher were immediately on their game and hit four unanswered points by the tenth minute. Shortly afterwards Gavin Donnelly won the ball behind the Banagher defence, threw off a tackle and from close-range rifled his shot over the bar. Banagher rattled off three more points in as many minutes to lead by three on the fourteenth minute. Desertmartin competing well scored another point from a free by Eunan McElhennon. Banagher moving smoothly notched a further 1-1 to lead by six after nineteen minutes. Then Desertmartin after moving the the ball deep into the Banagher defence won a penalty which Eunan McElhennon dispatched to the net with consummate ease. Buoyed by their revival in fortune Eunan popped over point in the twenty-second minute to cut the deficit to two. But Banagher lead seige to the Desertmartin rearguard and scored four more points approaching half-time. But Desertmartin kept foraging for possession and ended the first with a pointed free from Eunan McElhennon to trail by five at the break.
Desertmartin with the wind in their backs started the second-half confidently when Eunan McElhennon scored his fourth point. But Banagher were determined to retain their hard won first-half lead. Tackling strongly and preventing Desertmartin any easy shooting Banagher reduced Desertmartin’s scoring opportunities to a minimum. With Desertmartin pushing forward the visitors were always dangerous on the break and scored another three points by the thirty-seventh minute. Desertmartin meanwhile, despite having most of the play were forced to shoot from distance resulting in repeated wides. Banagher scored another point on the forty-fifth minute to lead by eight with five minutes to go. But Desertmartin’s determination to reduce the deficit was admirable. They spent the remaining minutes of the game encamped in the Banagher half scoring two further points, one from Eunan McElhennon the other from Michael McLaughlin. This brought the scoring to an end with Banagher winning 1-16 to 2-7.

U16s v Moneymore 28/04/2016
The U16s travelled to Moneymore on Thursday 28th for their fourth league game of the season. They came up against a very strong McCrackens side who revelled in the wide open spaces of their own pitch. Their powerful running mid-field pairing drove deep into the Desertmartin defence throughout the game creating repeated chances and building up a comfortable scoreline. But St Martin’s battled bravely and had many moments of good play. They finished with a flurry of scores in the closing minutes with Eunan McElhennon hitting 1 -1 and Ryan McElhennon scoring 0-1.
Moneymore were clear winners on a scorline of 8 -7 to 1-5.

U16s Desertmartin 8-06 Doire Colmcille 2-06
Desertmartin played host to Doire Colmcille on Thursday 21st. In a one sided game St martin’s came out on top 8 -6 to 2 -6. The match as a contest was really over at half -time when the locals led the city lads 7-3 to 1-2. Colmcille were not totally out of it in the opening thirty as they scored 1-2 and hit eight wides. The second half was a much more even contest with both sides competing equally for possession. The second period was low scoring but plenty of effort and creativity by both teams.

U16 Boys League Ballinascreen 5 – 8 Desertmartin 5 – 10
Desertmartin U16s travelled to Ballinascreen on Thursday evening April 14th to play their second league game. Both teams adopted well to a difficult playing surface and a restricted size pitch. The heavy conditions made it difficult for defenders to turn quickly and ground play was hindered by a muddy surface.
Ballinascreen were first to score with a neatly finished goal from Declan Grant. Spurned by conceding in the first minute Desertmartin replied strongly scoring 2 – 2 in the following five minutes with goals from Gavin Donnelly and Martin Mackle along with points from Eunan McElhennon and Kelan Meharg. St Martins continued to dominate hitting three further wides to a point from St Colm’s to lead by four after ten minutes. The following twelve minutes were a complete nightmare for the shell shocked Saffrons when the Screen went a rampage, scoring 3 – 5 to one point from the visitors. Two goals and a point from Pearse Kelly; a goal and a point from Declan Grant along with points from Conor Bradley; Paul Donnelly and Rian Fullerton had the locals leading by nine points entering the last minute of the first half. Desertmartin recovered their composure just before the break and saw Martin Mackle cut in from the right wing to blast in a much needed goal for the vistors trimming the deficit to seven points at half-time.
The second period saw a resurgent Desertmartin. Gavin Donnelly now playing in defence gave the Saffrons backline the security it needed and with Martin Mackle switched to right-half forward Desertmartin were a much more potent force. Within three minutes of the restart Desertmartin scored 1 – 2, a goal from Martin Mackle and points from Gavin Donnelly and Laclan Murray. The introduction of Laclan with his neat skills and perpetual movement complemented a hard working midfield drove Desertmartin forward in search of victory. Two points apiece from Martin Mackle and Laclan Murray; single points from Eunan McEhennon and Conor Kelly to Ballinascreen’s two points gave Desertmartin a two point lead entering the final minutes of the game. Seeking further scores to secure the win it seemed to have arrived when Eunan McElhennon scored a goal from close range leaving St Martin’s five points up with injury time approaching. But Ballinascreen weren’t finished. Pressing forward they pushed Desertmartin onto the backfoot winning a free on the 13m line direct in front of goals. Despite a densely packed goal-line the Ballinascreen lad drove low and to the net leaving only two points in it. With Ballinascreen in the ascendency and Desertmartin defending bravely time was of the essence for both sides. Before further scores could be taken the referee Kevin Quigg blew the final whistle leaving Desertmartin two point winners.

U16 Boys League Desertmartin 5 – 9 Ballymaguigan 3 – 13
In the first League game of the season Desertmartin U16 Boys took on Ballymaguigan on a heavy sodden pitch at Longfield on Thursday 7th April. Both teams lining out at eleven-a-side as their section determines provided a thrilling encounter until the final whistle. Ballymaguigan against the wind and sun playing with great assurance dominated the first half scoring 2 – 7 to Desertmartin’s 0 – 6. The Saffrons had to thank Eunan McElhennon for keeping the home side in the game hitting five of Desertmartin’s six with Michael McLaughlin scoring the sixth.
Facing the breeze and sun in the second half Desertmartin were a team transformed. Their defence closed down a free moving Quigan forward line along with good play from Eunan McElhennon (who dominated throughout), Kelan Meharg, a beaverish Laclan Murray and the attacking half-back Martin Mackle, Desertmartin took a firm grip on the game. Within five minutes after the restart Desertmartin hit two goals cutting the defecit to one point. The Quigan replied with 1 – 1 to steady the ship and lead by five before Desertmartin followed with 3 -1 to another two points from Ballymaguigan giving the St Martin lads a four point lead going into the last seven minutes. It was nail-biting stuff to the finish with Ballymaguigan scoring three unanswered points cutting Desertmartin’s lead to one in injury time. But the home side sealed victory when Kelan Meharg soloed half the length of the field to score the insurance point giving Desertmartin a two point victory.
