Reserves reach championship final

Saturday the 7th of October saw the reserves travel back to Owenbeg to play Steelstown in the reserve semi final replay. With nothing between the teams the previous week it was no doubt going to be just as tight the second day out.

That’s exactly how it worded out and following a low scoring first half the Martin’s went in at half time 2 points up on a score line of 0.04 to 0.02.

The opening score in the second half, coming from the boot of Barry McEldowney saw a three point lead for the Martins but a Steelstown goal brought it back to all square and all to play for. If Steelstown could have stayed level or even taken the lead at this time who knows how the game might have finished but as it was the ball came straight up the field and the quick feet of Marty Kelly soon restored the three point lead with a clinical finish.

Points from more of the Desertmartin forward line see the lead increase to 6 points with 10 to play and although Steelstown did pull it back to 4 again, the Martins booked their place in the Final with a 1.10 to 1.05 victory.
