MATCH REPORTS:
SENIORS; Castledawson 3,16 Â Desertmartin 0,5
Perhaps there was a reason to play this game mid week when most players could not make it but for the life of me, I can not come up with one. Desertmartin fielded with less than half of a senior team and the rest from the reserves. The result was obvious before the ball was even thrown in and Castledawson ran out easy winners 3,16 to 0,5. Hard to come up with a positive from this game other than there were no further injuries that I am aware of.k but when the ball came off the post, the corner forward reacted faster and punched the ball into the net to take the lead 1,1 to 3. Desertmartin attacked again and when Enda was fouled, he leveled the scores. Ogra attacked again and although the defence cleared the ball, indecision led to Ogra overturning possession and scoring a point. With the defence at sixes and sevens, the home side failed with their next two attacks but the writing was on the wall. The next attack resulted in another goal and when the high ball was pumped in again an own goal left the score 3,3 to 4 points. A point each before the end of the first half (Enda free after Mickey McCann fouled) left the score 3,4 to 5 points.
Under 14 Football
Unlike the game the previous week, Desertmartin found their stride from the start and Hayden Murray opened the scores with a well-taken goal. Bellaghy however responded with two goals of their own, with the second one being a shot for a point that dropped under the bar. Eunan O’Kane worked tirelessly but on numerous occasions was fouled. Oran Kelly showed his accuracy converting two frees, before Bellaghy hit again with another two goals. Andy Leyden was tightly marked at full forward and got very little change from the Bellaghy full back. Oran Kelly pegged on another free, to be followed by Daniel O’Hagan from play before Andy finally lost his marker and buried the ball in the back of the net. Bellaghy hit the final score of the half, a point to leave the scores 4,1 to 2,4.
In the second half, with Andy moved to net duty and Ronan Devlin in full forward, Desertmartin found it difficult to get the elusive goals with Bellaghy all to often using the blanket defence. With Bellaghy using as many players as possible between the St Martins attack and goal as possible, they made good use of the quick counter attack, stretching the St Martins defence to breaking point. Half way through the half, the goals came and although Desertmartin scored 5 points, Bellaghy added 3 goals and 6 points to their first half tally to close out the half 7,7 to 2,9. While Desertmartin had numerous scoring chances, their inability to take the decisive goals is a hard lesson learned. Eunan O’Kane had to retire in the second half after a crunching tackle and follow through resulted in him hobbling off the field. He was ably replaced by Ruairi Kelly. The Lads look forward to the Feile weekend in section six along with Gloucestershire, Ballymaguigan and Philadelphia.
