Under 14s played their fourth game on Sunday at home to the Loup who were fresh from their victory over Ballinderry. Final score 1.0 to 4.2. The Desertmartin defence continued strongly from their previous games with the Loup having to work hard for every ball, with their physical size being the only thing letting them down. The loss of Curtis from the midfield was difficult to replace. Daniel O’Hagan, at full back was well supported by Paul McCrystal and Rauiri O’Kane to his right and left. Hayden was assisted by Ben Norton and Eunan O’Kane at half back. With Andy Leyden in goals Desertmartin held their fair share of possession. The St Martin’s lads were first to most balls and their support play was as good as any seen this season. Ronan Devlin performed strongly in the forwards, ably supported by Ryan and Oran. The Loup picked off two goals against the balance of play before our forwards pulled back a goal from Rory Kelly, to leave the first half 1 goal to 2 goals.
The second half started with Andy Leyden moving out field and Oran Scollin taking over between the sticks. The Loup were awarded a dubious penalty and confidently slotted the ball home. This score unsettled the home team and The Loup followed up with two points. A strong display from Hayden Murray resulted in a penalty for St Martin’s but the keeper stood firm to not only save the goal but release their mid field who raced up the field to score another goal. Hayden continued with strong running being fouled on a regular basis. Ronan found it difficult to shake his marker and Desertmartin using all their subs, they failed to score in the second half to leave the final score, 1.0 to 4.2. It must be remembered that half this team is still under 12 with a sprinkling of primary 6 players also. Their determination to field in the higher level will stand them in good stead in the incoming league.
Minors play in the Hughes McElwee Cup at home to Kilrea on 14th March 3.00pm.
U 16s look forward to their first challenge away to Greenlough on 8th April.
