Seniors progress to next round of McGlinchey Cup

The seniors played neighbours Ballinascreen at Longfield today in the first round of the McGlinchey Cup. With the screen in division 1 and our lads playing in division 3 it may have looked like a mismatch but with derby games things are never that straightforward.

As with the past number of meeting with these two sides, it was going to be tough and it was going to be tight.

Management again opted for a mix of youth and experience with their starting line up with one change from the Coleraine game seeing Danny Murray take the place of Cormac McGuckin in the forward line.

As with the Coleraine game, Donal Murray was flying in the full forward line along with Aidy Mcguigan with the later grabbing the Martins only goal of the game half way through the first half. Points from Donal, "Bucket" Higgins, and Enda McGuckin saw the Martins go in at half time with a lead of two points on a score line of 1.06 to 1.04

Ballinascreen opened the scoring in the second half to bring the deficit down to one point but after a few missed chances the martins soon opened up the two point lead again.

The teams shared the next 4 points taking the score to 1.08 to 1.07 in the Martins favour. I was at this time the Martins opened up their advantage and powered into a 1.11 to 1.07 lead.

With the forwards proving they can hold their own, it was now up to the defenders to show their worth with the screen pressing hard to get back into the game but strong resolve from the back line and some timely blocks kept the screen to one point from here to the end leaving the Martins celebrating a win against their neighbours on a score line of Desertmartin 1.11 Ballinascreen 1.08
