Seniors save best for last

Sunday the 8th of October saw our seniors take on Drumsurn in a playoff to secure their league status for 2007. With the teams not meeting each other in the league since the opening game of the season it was hard for either side to know what to expect this time around.

In the league meeting at Drumsurn, two early goals from Michael McCann in the first 5 minutes set the Martin’s up for what should have points in the bag. But a strong 50 minutes of play from Drumsurn on that day saw them come back and win easy with 5 points to spare.

Could anyone have expected Michael McCann to score a goal in the opening two minutes again in this fixture, but thats exactly what happened.

The big difference between this game and the league meeting was the Martins were not going to go throwing away any leads today. In what must go down as their best performance of the season the Martins set about playing football which had not been played before this season. With all 15 men on the field playing their part the soon opened up a 10 point lead and looking like nothing would stop them.

Rory Murray, now playing in midfield was picking up all the ball around the middle of the field and Gerard Murray in full forward providing the outlet every time.

Even the ever reliable Jimmy McElhennon, fresh from the reserve victory over Steelstown the day before was involved in all the action.

With 8 minutes of the first half to go, Drumsurn scored their only score from play. A quick ball into their full forward, Ciaran Mullan, and with one side step the ball was in the back of the net. This should have been enough to make Desertmartin know that this game might not be over just yet. But form the following kickout the Drumsurn midfield picked up possession and again feed Mullan. This time his turn and pace put him through again only for his 14yd shot to rebound wide off the out side of the post. The Martin’s keeper Aidan Bradley claimed he had it covered but anyone in the Feeney postal area knew he was beat, after all he should have had the first goal but didn’t!!

From this point onwards the martins never looked back. Leading 2.07 to 1.02 at half time they out played and out scores Drumsure in the second half to run out winners on a score line of 3.14 to 1.05

Congratulations goes out to the lads, epically the lads who have just recently came into the team such as Stephen and Gregory who had great performances on the day.

Congratulations also goes to the management for the hard work and effort they have put in this season.
